I made an early morning visit to Nathan Road wetland in search of a Ruff reported three days earlier. Three other birders were there and no one had seen it.

We scanned the various bits of habitat where birds could be seen feeding mostly on the far side of the wetlands. No sign of the bird.

I lifted tired eyes from my binoculars and noticed a lone bird in a stick-filled pool not more than 4 to 5 metres away. Up shot the bins, YES!! One Ruff under our feet.

Many photos later we just stood and watched this lovely wader feed and ignore us for nearly an hour at which time I left the Ruff to go about its business.
